You’ve just had a new baby, and though both of you work and you really need the extra that your job provides, you don’t have to worry about taking time out because you’ll be able to keep the full amount of your weekly UBI. $500 (or $600, whatever the poverty line now is) every week! Not enough to party on… but together with the child benefits the government still offers, it will get you through. It’s great that society has at last seen the value in supporting families in this way. Besides, with a new baby, you’ll be working harder than you ever did in your job! While it’s meagre at best, at least the UBI now gives some recognition of the enormous value that ‘caring for home and family’ provides to society. Strange that it took so long to implement. For decades, data from around the world have shown that rearing children in a stable home, free from poverty, has been a boon for the mental and physical health of parents and children alike, even boosting the kids test scores.
